Westside Health Authority gets $1 million grant

State Rep. La Shawn Ford helped secure the $1 million grant in the new state budget, which took effect July 1. The money will help fund the Westside Health Authority’s ongoing “Good Neighbor Campaign.” Last year, the campaign received a $250,000 state grant.

Bike ride, parade and more this weekend on the West Side

BUILD will hold a bike ride for peace from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Aug. 24th. Participants are encouraged to register in advance for the event, which begins at 5100 W. Harrison St. The Chicago Community Alliance will hold “Summer Fest West” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Marshall High School, 3300 W. Jackson Blvd. City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin and 28th Ward Ald. Jason Ervin will host the event.

Don’t miss these summer celebrations today in Austin

BUILD is celebrating the end of summer camp from 12 to 4 p.m. Aug. 23 at 5100 W. Harrison St. State Rep. La Shawn Ford and state Sen. Kimberly Lightfoot are sponsoring the “I count” event to highlight the importance of the 2020 Census, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the 800 block of Lawler.

Get your car washed at BUILD

Stop by from 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at 5100 W. Harrison St. The cost is $7, and there also will be hot dogs and snow cones for sale. The event is helping the youth who participate in BUILD programs raise money for school supplies and uniforms.

Stop by Wednesday’s back to school dinner

Women of Self Love Inc. and Kids First Chicago are sponsoring the event being held from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Austin Coming Together, 5049 W. Harrison St. Parents and students will learn about how to navigate the process for selecting an elementary and high school.
