Don’t miss these summer celebrations today in Austin

BUILD is celebrating the end of summer camp from 12 to 4 p.m. Aug. 23 at 5100 W. Harrison St. State Rep. La Shawn Ford and state Sen. Kimberly Lightfoot are sponsoring the “I count” event to highlight the importance of the 2020 Census, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the 800 block of Lawler.

Stop by from 12 to 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at 5100 W. Harrison St. The cost is $7, and there also will be hot dogs and snow cones for sale. The event is helping the youth who participate in BUILD programs raise money for school supplies and uniforms.

Stop by Wednesday’s back to school dinner

Women of Self Love Inc. and Kids First Chicago are sponsoring the event being held from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21 at Austin Coming Together, 5049 W. Harrison St. Parents and students will learn about how to navigate the process for selecting an elementary and high school.

End-of-summer events set for the next two weekends

Don’t miss Congressman Danny Davis’ picnic Saturday, Aug. 17 from 8: 30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Columbus Park and a health fair hosted By Three Crosses of Calvary MBC & Purposed Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 4445-47 W. Madison St. On Aug. 25, Love in Action Ministries will be hosting a back-to-school event, and on Aug. 26th Austin schools and Chicago Police District 15 will hold its own back-to-school celebration.

Hold your alderman accountable – tonight

The City Bureau, Austin Weekly News and Austin Coming Together will be holding a workshop Aug. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Austin Community Academy High School, 231 N. Pine Ave. Two questions will be considered: What has your alderman been up to since the spring 2019 election, and how can residents hold the Chicago City Council accountable?
