The free two-hour seminar will be offered monthly starting this Friday.
The West Side community is invited to a public reception 10 a.m. Friday, at Madison Street and Austin Boulevard.
The Red Cross has no designated shelters in Austin, causing some residents to worry about where they could go if a tornado, flood or other natural disaster hits the West Side.
As a member of the Westside Ministers Coalition, AustinTalks has been offered two free tickets to the Nov. 18 performance of Romeo and Juliet at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
The two-day event will be held at Malcolm X College. People looking for work must attend both days.
A coalition of West Side groups that includes the NAACP, Westside Ministers Coalition and South Austin Coalition Community Council will share its recommendations about Chicago Public Schools’ selective enrollment/magnet school policy.
The next vigil will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the corner of Laramie and Division.
All but two of the school’s 116 seniors will get their diplomas next month. Many students credit for their success Principal Karen Washington, who’s also leaving the West Side school.
Dozens of West Side youth spent spring break attending a week-long youth empowerment and job readiness program. They’re guaranteed jobs this summer, and community leaders hope that means fewer juvenile arrests.
