About 30 people gathered at the start of Memorial Day weekend at the 29th Ward Veterans Peace Garden, 5413 W. Madison St., to celebrate the life of Robert Thomas and other veterans.
The West Side organization is working with the Chicago Botanic Garden on developing the urban farm and wellness hub in the 4900 block of West Thomas and Division streets. Mildred Wiley, a longtime community leader and advocate for Austin who worked at Bethel New Life, died two years ago.
The Austin Green Team continues its “virtual movie in the garden” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5.
Meet at 9 a.m. July 11 at Adams on any of these six corners: Austin, Mason, Mayfield, Menard, Waller and Parkside. Rose bushes and annuals will be planted, and PPE supplies, light snacks and drinks will be available. Bring your garden tools, neighbors and friends!
The Austin Garden Collective will be hosting community volunteer days at various gardens throughout Austin this summer. There will be some changes – like social distancing and mask wearing – due to the coronavirus.
29th Ward residents approved six out of seven projects that will be completed over the next several months. The projects include street resurfacing, community park improvements and a pedestrian crosswalk, with a safety island.
Voting will be available to any resident of the 29th Ward who is 14 or older. Ballots will be available online on Ald. Chris Taliaferro’s website and in person at his office, 6272 W. North Ave.; at the Austin Chicago Public Library, 5615 W. Race Ave.; and at the North Austin Chicago Public Library, 5724 W. North Ave. Voting ends Nov. 20.
The Austin Green Team’s summer movie series continues Tuesday, July 30 at 168 N. Laramie. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and non-alcoholic drinks. Snacks will be provided. And don’t miss the garden tour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at Laramie and Maypole.
