Back-to-school celebration set for Tuesday

Local advocates, community organizations and businesses will kick off a safe and successful school year from 12 to 7 p.m. Aug. 17 on Harrison Street from Laramie to Lavergne.
The annual event, organized by BUILD, has been postponed due to weather. The “summer of opportunity” celebration will be held Friday, Aug. 17.
The West Side Historical Society – in partnership with Ald. Jason Ervin, AustinTalks and other partners – will host this year’s Juneteenth festival and parade for peace June 22-24 in Garfield Park. Vendors are invited to contact organizers; VIP passes are also available.
There will be entertainment, food and socializing from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 21 at Columbus Park Field House, 500 S. Central Ave. Congressman Danny Davis along with several other officials are putting on the free event.
Celebrate the spirit of unity Dec. 15. The kickoff begins at 5 pm. at Unity Fellowship Church at Cicero and Madison, followed by the tree lighting at 6 p.m. in front of the 15th District Police station, 5701 W. Madison.
One and all are invited to the hospital’s 27th annual Christmas celebration from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dec. 9 at Columbus Park Refectory, 5701 W. Jackson Blvd.
There will be free food, fun and games, and prizes from 12 to 5 p.m. Aug. 18 at 5100 W. Harrison St. All ages are welcome!
Dr. Arthur Lockhart will hold the 29th annual event July 29 at Healing Temple C.O.G.I.C., 4941 W. Chicago Ave. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the kickoff is at 9 a.m.
