1st District hopeful Brenda Smith declined to talk about her candidacy. She’s worked for the outgoing commissioner and has ties to one of the other candidates.

The June 28 meeting at Columbia College Chicago, sponsored by the Community Media Workshop, brought together journalists with youth and members from organizations to promote awareness and discuss ways to improve reporting the issues.
Thirty-one projects will get grants of $2,000 or $10,000 from The Chicago Community Trust.
The Chicago Headline Club event, held last weekend at Sankofa Cultural Arts & Business Center, gave West Side residents a chance to critique their community newspapers.
