Austin lawmaker La Shawn Ford said the new state budget includes $12 million to fund Illinois’ witness protection program. The Leaders Network has been pushing for the funding for years.
The first-term alderman won another four years on the Chicago City Council, beating Dwayne Truss and Zerlina A. Smith. Incumbents Emma Mitts (37th) and Jason Ervin (28th) also easily won re-election.
The petitions of two of the three incumbent alderman – 28th Ward Ald. Jason Ervin and 37th Ward Ald. Emma Mitts – have not been challenged. But each of the challengers in both of those wards are having to defend the signatures they collected to secure a spot on the Feb. 26th ballot.
Five candidates filed for the 28th, 29th and 37th Ward seats on the first day they could. Candidates have a week – until Nov. 26th – to file their nominating petitions with the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
