Elementary-age youth from South Austin and Garfield Park are invited to stop by the Santa room at Legal Prep Charter Academy, 4319 W. Washington Blvd. from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 9 and Dec. 10.
Residents can apply online or at any of the city’s six community service centers. The application deadline is midnight Dec. 27.
Wednesday, Dec. 8th is the deadline to register for the 37th Ward annual toy giveaway. The event is hosted by Ald. Emma Mitts and Global Outreach MInistries. Call (773) 379-0960.
Young people on the West Side who get care at Erie Family Health and students attending Nash Elementary School and Spencer Technology Academy will benefit. The new funding will help more youth receive dental services at a clinic in Humboldt Park and provide water botter-filling stations at the two Austin schools.
The tree lighting will be Dec. 4 at Assumption Church, 601 S. Central. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by the lighting at 6 p.m. All are welcome at this free event, which will include Christmas carols.
State Rep. La Shawn Ford will host Saturday’s session from 10 a.m. to noon at the Kehrein Center for the Arts. As chairman of the Illinois House Public Safety and Violence Prevention Task Force, Ford is seeking input as he and other lawmakers develop legislative solutions.
The annual event will take place from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 in the 600 block of Laurel community gardens. Food and refreshments will be served. Social distancing and wearing of face masks will be required.
The Austin Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual holiday parade and tree lighting festival Friday Dec. 3. The parade starts at Unity Fellowship Church at Cicero and Madison, with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. in front of the 15th District police station, 5701 W. Madison st.
The Chicago Department of Housing will begin accepting applications Dec. 6 for its latest round of rental assistance for tenants and landlords financially impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. Dec. 18.
Watch for the CTA’s holiday train and bus, which will be traveling throughout the city in coming weeks. The tradition – in its 30th year – is sponsored by Allstate. The holiday train will be traveling through Austin on Nov. 30, and Dec. 16-18. The holiday bus will be in Austin Dec. 7-9.
