Last Austin disaster recovery center to close Tuesday

The free performance of the Apollo Chorus will be at 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at Kehrein Center for the Arts, 5628 W. Washington Blvd.
Register for the workshop, which will be held fro 12 to 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Garfield Park Nature Area, 100 N. Central Park.
Grants are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so residents should apply for the grants ASAP.
West Side residents are invited to a Halloween party in the 800 block of North Massasoit that starts at 4 p.m. Oct. 31. The free party – which will include hot dogs and candy – is sponsored by the Good Neighbors Campaign.
Oct. 30 is the deadline for residents and business owners to apply to FEMA for disaster assistance in the wake of the summer flooding.
All are welcome at the free events, which start Friday evening with a trunk or treat event at the northeast corner of Central and Harrison and end Sunday with a family fall festival at Chicago West Bible Church, 5916 W. Lake St.
Applications are being accepted for the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). More than $200 million has been set aside to help eligible residents pay their heating bills this winter.
The second annual “It’s Getting Chili in Soul City” was held Saturday in Austin. Shirley McClain and Shirley Howard took home 1st place honors.
The free community event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 21 at 600 N. Lorel Ave. There will be a resource fair, giveaways, snacks and more.
