A project to revitalize Central Avenue from Madison Street to Chicago Avenue is starting its first steps in the planning process. Austin Coming Together is leading the charge to revitalize one of Austin’s major thoroughfares.
The Westside Health Authority and Austin Coming Together, joined by Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Planning Department Commissioner Maurice Cox, will break ground on the new $40 million ASPIRE Center for Workforce Innovation. It will be located in the former Emmett Elementary School at 5500 W. Madison St., which was closed under Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration.
Rev. Ira J. Acree, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church and co-chairman of the Leaders Network, hopes to replace Brandon Johnson when he leaves the 1st District seat to become mayor of Chicago next month.
Residents are invited for a community meal before seeing the award-winning documentary “Westside Stories: Paradise Lost” on April 27.
Medicaid enrollees will need to resubmit eligibility to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services to maintain coverage.
Distribution will take place at 11 a.m. April 22 at Michele Clark High School, 5101 W. Harrison St.
The clean up begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the park, 500 S. Central Ave., and finishes with a free lunch. Then the activities move downtown to the Chicago Cultural Center.
Between 5,000 to 7,000 people are expected to be served each year at the new facility. The hospital is working with Stone Community Development Corp.
A state committee will hold a final hearing Monday night, where the Illinois African Americans for Equitable Redistricting will push for a election map and the creation of a standing committee of the Chicago Board of Education.
