There are more than 3,000 properties in Cook County’s District 1 – much of it on Chicago’s West Side – in danger of being sold at the annual tax auction that begins May 3.
The measure, which will take effect in November, will ensure that housing providers don’t consider certain aspects of someone’s criminal record — such as arrests, juvenile records, and sealed and expunged records — when making housing determinations. Commissioner Brandon Johnson, an Austin resident who was elected to the board last year, was the chief sponsor of the amendment.
Stop by the branch at 5615 W. Race Ave. from 3 to 5 p.m. April 30 for a free book and bagel, too. The event is sponsored by A House in Austin and Neuberger Berman.
The programs – which begin June 24th – are free and open to Chicago high school students who are at least 14 years old (16 years old for internships). In total, about 13,000 paid apprenticeship and internship opportunities will be available. Participating teen apprentices will be eligible to earn a stipend of up to $420 depending on the program level; interns can earn up to $10.50 per hour.
Students in 3rd through 8th grade will be competing from 3 to 5 p.m. April 19 at the Austin library for cash prizes, a trophy and recognition. The event is sponsored by the American Women of Oak Park.
State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford and the leader of the UIC Great Cities Institute will stand alongside victims of violence this morning to offer solutions.
Fees are waived through April 18th for moving violations but not for parking or red light camera tickets. You can pay in person or by phone.
Kick off National Poetry Month by sharing a favorite song, dance, poetry or another way you’d like to express yourself. The event is from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at the Austin branch, 5615 W. Race Ave.
West Side teens are invited to participate in a “speakeasy for justice,” which will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 6, 13 and 27, with a performance set for 7 p.m. May 3.
