Momma Kemba, an impersonator of historic African-American women, will perform as Aunt Clara Brown 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 at Third Unitarian Church in Austin.
Momma Kemba will assume the persona of a former slave from Virginia who became a community leader and philanthropist and aided settlement of former slaves during the time of Colorado’s Gold Rush.
The annual black history month luncheon, a fundraiser for the church’s Austin scholarship program, will follow the service. A highly varied menu will be offered for $15 per family, or $6 per adult and $3 per child.
Born in 1800, Clara Brown married another slave, had four children, was separated from her family in 1835 when all were sold to different owners, received her freedom in 1856 and ultimately freed more than 16 relatives with her investment earnings.
Mama Kemba will dramatize episodes from Clara’s life.
Serving Oak Park and Chicago’s Far West Side, Third Unitarian is located at 301 N. Mayfield, two blocks east and one block south of Austin Boulevard and Lake Street.
