There are many pantries, soup kitchens and mobile produce marts for those in need of food on the West Side.
Y officials tell The Chicago Tribune there are plans to tear down the building, sell it or close the facility at 501 N. Central Ave., but they stopped short of making any blanket assurances. This news comes after the non-profit’s executive director, Cyril Nichols, left his position and a housing program for the mentally ill was shut down.
Officials say other organizations can better provide these services; the facility’s nearly 300 residency rooms will continue to be available.
The year-round program also gives hope for the future, say coaches and students. Youth can sign up 501 N. Central. Ave.
Rowing is more than just good exercise for some West Side teens. They’re learning the sport can lead to college scholarships and travel oversees, program organizers say.
