Community groups urge CPS to halt all school actions

Chicago Citizens United to Preserve Public Education also wants the district to nullify the turnaround efforts at Ronald E. McNair Elementary and two other schools.
The school will be turned over later this year to non-profit operator AUSL.
Ronald E. McNair Elementary will be operated by the Academy for Urban School Leadership starting with the 2014-2015 academic year.
Last week’s meeting was held to discuss the schools’ issues, assess past reforms and current changes in process, and talk about Chicago Teachers Union negotiations.
They say CPS left the community out of the process and the decision is not in students’ best interest.
West Side residents sat in classrooms and pitched tents outside the building until the school board agreed to meet with them and discuss plans to overhaul the school.
Local residents are upset about CPS’ plan to restaff the school next year.
CPS will not be closing schools in Austin next year but plans to merge the two campuses.
The Illinois General Assembly’s Chicago Educational Facilities Task Force is holding the Dec. 1 meeting to examine whether CPS’ decisions comply with the new reform law.
