Summer program for middle school students and new freshman

Northeastern Illinois University’s Beyond the Bell program is offering a four-week summer academy for 6th and 7th grader at Ellington or Young Elementary Schools.

The application deadline for the program – which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 1 through July 25 – is Friday, June 13, and applications can be obtained at either Ellington, 224 N. Central Ave., or Ella Flagg Young, 1434 N. Parkside Ave.. The free program includes busing and meals.

There is a similar program for students graduating from 5th grade at these schools. Called Summer B.L.A.S.T. (Blending Learning, Arts and Sports Together), the program will be held the same dates at Young Elementary School. The application deadline also is June 13.

And there’s a program for incoming freshmen at Michele Clark High School. The JumpStart program includes prep classes in math, science and language arts, as well as a mentoring seminar on the transition to high school.

Students may also sign up for a Spoken Word workshop series that takes place after lunch at BUILD. Dates for this program is June 23 through July 17.
