Free performances at local parks

The Chicago Park District in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events announces updated schedules for Kalapriya Center for Indian Performing Arts and In the Spirit and Shanta.

Performances are part of a special parks series that features local companies in an eclectic interpretation of classical performances from ballet to traditional art forms from around the globe.

All performances are free.

Here’s the schedule:

Tonight (Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 ) will feature Sara Ranganathan and Gana Ranganathan from Kalapriya. They will perform at Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave (773-638-1766). No advance reservations required for any of the performances or workshops

Kalapriya presents a program reflecting the rich tapestry of classical Indian music and dance. The performance will showcase local and national acts, including south Indian artist Saraswathi Ranganathan, who starts by playing the veena, an Indian string instrument, and Gana Ranganathan on mridangam (percussion).

Kalapriya will also provide participatory, interactive workshops where musicians will demonstrate scales and notes and dancers will show steps and movements.

Then on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. there will be an Indian rhythm workshop for kids. Alam Khan and Shyam Kane will perform. And there will be a performance Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. It will feature Alam Khan on sarod (stringed instrument) and Shyam Kane on tabla.

Both will be held at Austin Town Hall, 5610 W. Lake St. (773-287-7658).
