Artists perform poetry

By |

Poetry on the Patio recently kicked off its ninth season.

Markell “Kell-O-G” Mooney has been hosting the event at his mother’s home since 2003.

It began as a way to honor his father’s memory: “We wanted to come up with a concept to keep the family spirit going.”

Opportunities for artists to have poetry slams or open mic events in Austin are not as numerous as those on the city’s South Side, he said. Mooney wants West side artists to have a place to share their talents with residents in a family-style setting.

Aside from his hosting duties, Mooney teaches a poetry and writing class at La Follette Park. Every quarter, he hosts the Creative Teen Showcase.

The next Poetry on the Patio events will be from 8 p.m. to midnight July 16 and 30, Aug. 13 and 27, and Sept. 10 at 5156 W. Concord Place.
