Part of the mission of the Central Austin Neighborhood Association is to unite residents in the effort to transform Austin into a more vibrant and attractive place to live, work, play and raise children. In addition to encouraging residents to regularly pick up the trash in front of their properties, we coordinate groups of volunteers to clean our targeted 16-block area.
We want to create and support a greater sense of responsibility for creating a better environment for our children. We want to raise expectations and set better examples for all residents.
Building on our work from last year, our first project is the Spring Cleaning that will take place on Saturday, March 19 at 8:30 a.m. We will begin at the corner of Austin Boulevard and Madison Street, and cover the area bounded by Austin, Menard, Madison and Corcoran.
We invite everyone to come out and participate. Last year, the participants ranged in age from 7 to 70. Along the way, we get the chance to meet and greet our neighbors. At the end of the cleaning, we get together to share a meal. The experience is rewarding on many levels.
This Spring Cleaning is the first step in our larger plan for bringing more flowers and greenery to the area. On May 14, we will be tilling the land at the corners and on a vacant lot to prepare the ground for new plantings. On May 21, we will begin to plant the corners and midways. Later, on Sept. 17, we will conduct the Fall Clean Up.
