Weather permitting, artists and West Side residents will resume work Wednesday and Thursday on the mural that will be the centerpiece of a community garden at West Chicago and North Mayfield avenues.

The 15 x 30 foot mural, “Austin Is Doing Something,” was inspired by With Me Comes A Cure, an awareness campaign of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. It’s aim is to spotlight the growing HIV epidemic among African Americans and stress the importance of developing an AIDS vaccine.

The mural was designed by artist Carla Carr and is the result of a year-long collaboration between residents, the foundation, the Sankofa Cultural Arts & Business Center and Critical Massive, an artist collective.

Volunteers are needed from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. If the work isn’t completed Thursday, more volunteers will be needed May 1.

This schedule is weather dependent, so contact Johnathon Briggs 24 hours in advance to confirm at: (312) 929-9179 or jbriggs@aidschicago.org.
