Two Chicagoans charged in officer’s death

Two men charged in connection with officer Clifton Lewis’ murder will be in bond court today.

Tyrone Clay, 29, and Edgardo Colon, 34, both of Chicago, were charged early this morning with murder while in commission of an armed robbery and first degree murder of a peace officer, Cook County state’s attorney spokeswoman Sally Daly told the Chicago Tribune.

Colon was stopped Tuesday by police for making an improper turn in his vehicle, authorities said. A .357-caliber handgun with two live rounds was found, they said.

The Tribune reported that Colon clutched a baseball hat in his hands and shook his head in court Friday as prosecutors detailed the charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He was ordered held without bond on an unrelated gun charge and is on parole for a conviction for home invasion.

The 41-year-old, eight-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was slain Dec. 29th as he worked an off-duty security job at M&M Quick Foods, 1201 N. Austin Blvd. Two robbers shot Lewis, then sources say, took cash from the register and his gun.

Hundreds attended Lewis’ funeral Thursday. He leaves behind his mother, his fiancee, an 11-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old stepson.
