Shannon D. Callahan, past master of New Yerusalem Lodge #158, gets a shave and lining during the "No Shave November" event held in Austin earlier this month.

A few dozen people stopped by “No Shave November,” which was held earlier this month at AJ Styles Beauty & Barber Salon, 6624 W. North Ave.

In partnership with no-shave.org, men were encouraged to stop by the Saturday before Thanksgiving for a haircut, fellowship and education.

The New Yerusalem Lodge #158 organized the event, where donations were accepted to no-shave.org to fight colorectal cancer as well as to St. Jude’s Research Hospital and the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Anthony Jones, owner of AJ Styles Beauty & Barber Salon, speaks to members of New Yerusalem Lodge #158 during the “No Shave November” event.

One of the organizers, Markell L. Mooney, got the idea for the event when he realized it was time for him to get a prostate exam. Many of the members at the lodge are in their mid 30s to late 50s, around the age men are suggested to get a rectal exam.

Mooney thought it was the perfect opportunity to talk about health and wellness as a community.
