CPS’ one-day walkout, march affects Austin

A number of West Side teachers participated Friday in Chicago Teachers Union’s one-day citywide strike. Demonstrators from all over the city flooded the streets in hopes of achieving a new contract and increased funding for education from the state.

Like many schools around the city, Austin Community Academy High School on Chicago’s West Side was a target of the walkout. Teachers – joined by some students – gathered early Friday morning outside on the corner of Fulton and Central to demand more resources for their students, then marched through the neighborhood.

CTU members say they’ve lost teachers and their students deserve better.

Teachers aren’t happy with Gov. Bruce Rauner, who’s been unable to craft a state budget with the Democrat-controlled Illinois General Assembly. And they’re also unhappy with Chicago Public Schools officials; CTU has been working under a contract that expired last summer.

Teachers and their supporters rallied outside several Austin schools, our partners at the Austin Weekly News reported.
