Chicago DUI checkpoints target Austin

The Chicago Police Department had 10 announce sobriety checkpoints in Austin overĀ  4 1/2 years, while Jefferson Park had not one in more than five years.

This despite the predominantly white area having one of the highest rates of drunken driving accidents and fatalities. In Austin, there were four times fewer alcohol-related crashes than Jefferson Park.

Chicago police scheduled 152 roadside sobriety checks, from February 2010 through June 2014, Of those, 127 were in black or Latino police districts Chicago Tribune reporter Angela Caputo found in a recently published investigation.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel declined to discuss the racial disparity in this story.
