Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (Tau Gamma Omega chapter) has teamed with the Chicago Park District to host “AKAzaar: The Power of Community” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 at the Austin Town Hall, 5610 W. Lake St.

AKAzaar will provide information on job training, financial assistance, health tips and more to residents of Chicago’s West Side and Near West suburban communities.

“We’re delighted to be providing this free event to Chicago’s Austin community and surrounding areas,” says Kimberly R. Morton, president of Tau Gamma Omega. “We are hopeful that with the range of services we’re offering, everyone with a need will be able to attend and obtain meaningful and useful information.”

In addition to free health screenings, AKAzaar will offer residents information on assistance in paying utility bills and how to save on their monthly mortgage with lower interest rates.

There also will be workshops on career development; women’s health and heart disease; home energy management; adult and juvenile justice; and a work-readiness program for ex-offenders.

Tau Gamma Omega is collaborating with several community and health organizations, local colleges, businesses and corporations. These include ComEd; the American Heart Association; the Safer Foundation; City Colleges of Chicago; and Austin Coming Together.

AKAzaar’s activities are being done in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national health, economic security and social justice initiatives.

Other events at will include children’s face painting, a surprise visit from a famous animated character and a natural hair presentation by Austin-area cosmetologist Tywanna Patrick of Nu B Gin Ns Hair Salon.

There will be lots of free food, gifts, raffles and prizes, as well as an assortment of local vendors.
