Apply now for help paying your heating bill

The general enrollment application period for LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) opens today – Nov. 1.

LIHEAP is a federally-funded program that provides grants to help customers pay outstanding energy bills, reconnect natural gas service and maintain their home’s gas service.

The Nov. 1 application period is open to everyone who meets the criteria, including seniors (60+), people with disabilities and households where disconnection due to nonpayment has occurred.

Customers are eligible to apply for LIHEAP grants if their income is 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, based on these family sizes and monthly incomes:

For a single-person household: You can’t make more than $1,436 in a month

For a 2-person household: The income limit is $1,939

For a 3-person household: The income limit is $2,441

For a 4-person household: The income limit is $2,944

For a 5-person household: The income limit is $3,446

For a 6-person household: The income limit is $3,949

For a 7-person household: The income limit is $4,451

For an 8-person household: The income limit is $4,954

Customers should bring the following documents with them if applying for a LIHEAP grant:

*proof of gross income from all household members for the last 30 days
*copy of most recent utility bill
*proof of Social Security numbers of all household members
*medical eligibility card for any household member receiving TANF
*copy of rental agreement in cases where utilities are included in the rent.

The LIHEAP program is administered in Cook County by CEDA (Community Economic Development Organization).

To apply and find the location of the closest application site, Peoples Gas customers can call CEDA’s hotline at 1-800-571-CEDA (2332) or visit www.cedaorg.net. Customers can also visit www.peoplesgasdelivery.com for a list of application sites and guidelines.

To help customers prepare for winter, Peoples Gas is encouraging customers to save by taking advantage of the Peoples Gas Home Energy Rebate Program, which is offering a $50 rebate on a furnace or boiler tune-up.

To qualify for the rebate, the tune-up must be performed by a professional HVAC technician and cover all items listed on the checklist located at peoplesgasrebates.com.
