Former Brach’s candy plant to be demolished

By |

The Chicago Sun-Times reported this week that the owners of the former Brach’s complex at 401 N. Cicero will be demolishing what’s left of the candy plant.

A spokesman for ML Realty Partners LLC told the Sun-Times that it intends to replace the factory with a 520,000-square-foot industrial building.

The candy plant stopped operations in 2004 and has stood vacant since. In 2007, part of the factory was blown up for scenes in “The Dark Knight” Batman movie.

AustinTalks has reported in recent years that some West Siders have been advocating that the former candy factory site be used for a public school, allowing more Austin children to attend high school in their neighborhood instead of traveling to other parts of the city, or dropping out.
