Celebrate Black History Month at West Side parks

The Chicago Park District invites you to come out and enjoy the UMOJA Black History Month Celebration. This event is free and will be held at Homan Square Community Center Park, 3359 W. Arthington St., Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

UMOJA highlights the cultures of Africa and African Americans. There will be special performances of music, dance, and spoken words. The event is designed to showcase how the rich legacies of the African experience have enhanced the lives of Chicago communities, national communities as well as global communities. Programming includes vendors of African cultural items and is designed to engage inter-generational participation. Special performances are featured during the day-long celebration.

Know Your Heritage

This celebration features “Know Your Heritage” competition of the students in the after school program. Parents are encouraged to come by to cheer on the young people.

Piano Lesson—the Play

Feb. 21, 22 and 23 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Enjoy the performance skills of adults in the Austin Town Hall drama class as they perform the play “Piano Lesson” by acclaimed playwright, the late August Wilson.

Black History Showcase

Feb. 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
