The Austin YMCA announced yesterday it is closing its member center and transferring members to the McCormick Tribune YMCA – about four miles away at 1834 N. Lawndale Ave.

A spokeswoman for the YMCA said today the Austin location will officially close its doors Oct 1.

Residential housing will continue at the Austin Y at 501 N. Central Ave., and extensive Y programming and services remain for Austin youth and families at May Elementary Community Academy, 512 S. Lavergne Ave., according to a press release.

In 2010, our partners at the Austin Weekly News reported the closure of the Austin YMCA’s residental program for the mentally ill. The Chicago Tribune followed-up with a story about the location’s uncertain future, citing concerns about the deteriorating building.
