Westside girl wins award at NAACP national conference

Jela McKinney won top honors.

The Chicago Westside Chapter of the NAACP took seven performers last month to the national NAACP Afro-American, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, held in Los Angeles.

Jela McKinney placed third in the national competition.

Jela McKinney, a freshman at ChiArts (Chicago High School for the Arts), won a bronze medal in drawing, one of 26 categories.

Also competing were: Breanna Smith (music instrumental classical), Kayla Robertson (music vocal contemporary), Layla West (oratory), Shaondell Black (filmmaking), Destiny Thompson (dramatics) and Ebonee Wilkins (scuplture).
