For the third year in a row, Chicago Shakespeare Theater brought the theatrical works of William Shakespeare to Columbus Park.
“It helps us to enable cultural diversity and bring the community members out,” said Janetta Goines, assistant project manager at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, which along with the Chicago Park District made the performance possible.
With 18 performances scheduled throughout the summer at different neighborhoods across Chicago, Shakespeare in the Park aims to unify communities and expose residents to “Shakespeare’s genius for storytelling, language and empathy for the human condition,” according to the theater company.
This year’s performance focuses on Shakespeare’s greatest hits from the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet to Othello, Goines said.
And although some may find Shakespeare a bit hard to follow, Goines assures the production’s contemporary flare means the crowd won’t miss a beat.
“It’s broken down so that you understand it more,” Goines said. “And it’s mashed up to music of today… so it’s a very unique performance.”
