The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is sponsoring a seven days of free classes in Austin and throughout the city as part of Money Smart Week.
From Saturday through April 12, more than 500 free financial education seminars geared for consumers will be held.
The classes will cover a variety of money-management topics, including saving for college, buying a house, using credit wisely and saving for retirement.
Here’s what will be offered in Austin:
How to find and access money for a down payment: Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at Bethel New Life Business Center, 1130-40 N. Lamon Ave.
- Learn about city and state sponsored programs that can assist you with downpayment funds for your home. Learn about the layering process.
- Credit counseling available. All areas qualify, not just for first-time buyers.
Property taxes too high? It’s never too late to reduce them: West Chicago Avenue library branch, 4856 W. Chicago Ave. from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8.
- Taxpayer advocate helps you learn how to lower property taxes, get exemptions, refunds, understand reassessment notices, self-help links, tips and more.
- Bring your tax bill, official appeal and exemption forms will be provided.
Building your nest egg: Real-world retirement planning: North Austin library branch, 5724 W. North Ave. from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Randy Bruns, CFP, discusses how to plan and invest for retirement, as presented by the Financial Planning Association of Illinois.
Turning 65? Understanding Medicare: North Austin library branch, 5724 W. North Ave. from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10. Seminar will cover Original Medicare Parts A and B, Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans and more.
