College scholarship deadlines approaching

The North Avenue Business Association (NABA) is sponsoring its eighth annual scholarship program for high school seniors entering college as a business major.

“In today’s tough economic times, the North Avenue Business Association feels it is very important to give back to the community and help our future business leaders fulfill their dreams of going to college and getting their business degree,” NABA President Lee Owens said in a statement.

“You never know, the next Bill Gates of Microsoft or Ginni Rometty of IBM could be someone right here in our community.”

Eligible students must complete an application and essay, and live Oak Park, River Forest or in the Chicago neighborhoods of Galewood or North Austin. The borders for Chicago residents are: Armitage/Railroad Tracks (2000 North) to the north, Division (1200 North) to the south, Austin Boulevard (6000 West) to the east and Harlem (7200 West) to the west.

The deadline for applications is March 31, 2014. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in mid-April 2014.

One Million Degrees (OMD) is also accepting applications for the Signature Scholarship program.

All students planning to attend the City Colleges of Chicago, College of Lake County, Harper College, Prairie State College or South Suburban College next year academic year should apply by April 10. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Students selected as OMD Scholars will benefit from comprehensive supports, including:
·tuition assistance and a stipend to defray costs associated with attending college;
·monthly workshops focused on professional development, financial literacy and civic engagement;
·academic, professional and personal guidance from OMD staff and a coach;
·free, private tutoring sessions held on campus.
