Loretto Hospital offering free COPD screening throughout November

By |

In recognition of National COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Awareness Month, The Loretto Hospital, is offering free pulmonary function tests for uninsured and underinsured residents of Austin and surrounding neighborhoods throughout the month of November.

COPD is a progressive, debilitating respiratory condition most often associated with smoking that is the third leading cause of disease death in the United States. More than 16.4 million people have been diagnosed with COPD and millions more may have the disease without even knowing it, according to the American Lung Association.

Recent research shows African Americans developing COPD with less cumulative smoking and at a younger age than non-Hispanic whites, suggesting a greater susceptibility to the damaging effects of tobacco smoke.

“While there’s no cure for COPD, if it’s diagnosed and treated early, it can be a very manageable condition,” said Dr. Nikhila Juvvadi, Loretto Hospital’s chief medical officer. “A simple, noninvasive pulmonary function test is the first step toward improved quality of life and helping our community breathe easier.”

Free pulmonary function testing is available to Austin residents living in the 60651, 60644, 60624, 60623 and 60612 Zip codes. Certain restrictions apply.
