Town hall to address school actions Thursday

State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford has called an emergency meeting for West Side residents Thursday to give input on proposed Chicago Public Schools actions.

The town hall comes after the district released final enrollment and space utilization data for the 2012-2013 school year, reporting about 50 percent of schools are underutilized and nearly 140 schools are half empty.

CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett has appointed a nine-member board to assist the district with making more informed decisions about the school actions. The commission is charged with leading a community engagement process and gathering information through open dialogue with communities.

Ford is asking residents to be part of the process that will help the district make informed decisions on the West Side.

The 6 p.m Dec. 13 town hall will be held at Sankofa Cultural Arts and Business Center, 5820 W. Chicago Ave.
