A new 62-by-16-foot mural in Austin reminds the community of its roots, said David Rodriguez, program manager at Youth Outreach Services. The mural can be seen on the outside of YOS’ building at 5910 W. Division St. Stop by and check it out.
More than 100 students from civics classes on Chicago’s West and Northwest sides are mobilizing people to vote in the Nov. 3rd election. They’ve been calling potential voters and handing out campaign literature even though many of them aren’t old enough to vote themselves.
The 15th Policer District hosted a Zoom meeting last week, seeking community input on the district’s policing strategy for the upcoming year. Residents expressed a need for more transparency, and they want officers to work to build better relationships with the community.
A group of about a dozen youth created their own quality-of-life plan for Austin this summer, modeled after a similar plan being implemented by Austin Coming Together. The youth’s plan focuses on public safety, mental health and youth empowerment, and will be unveiled later this fall by the group Territory.
ROYAL, a group of youths from Oak Park, led a march through Austin, Garfield Park and Oak Park last weekend. They were protesting police brutality and commemorating the death of Elijah McClain, a Black man who died while walking home from work last year in Colorado and after police put him in a choke hold.
Students can apply for more than 400 programs in the arts, communication, leadership, sports and STEM that begin the week of July 6. Teens will earn a stipend between $336 and $850 depending on the length and level of expertise required for the program.

By The Hand Club For Kids broke ground over the weekend on a new $8 million, 30,000-square-foot addition to its 416 N. Laramie Avenue location. The expansion will allow Moving Everest Charter School, who leases the facility during the day, to serve another 270 students in sixth through eighth grade starting in August 2020.
